Stalin's Slave Race

Guilty Pleasures Radio has often discussed the theories of the late Zechariah Sitchen, who hypothesized that humans were created as a slave race to ancient extraterrestrials to mine gold. This suggests that DNA was tampered with turning early man into homo sapiens. As time passed, the extraterrestrials left and civilizations of this slave race continued to thrive and evolve technologically until the present age. While Sitchen's theories are disputed for a large number of reasons, the concept of a slave race has entered the minds of quite a few over the course of history.

As science progresses, genetic modification is becoming more and more accessible. Whether this is for the best or not is a topic for another time, but it's hardly a stretch to say that that Spiderman adage "With great power comes great responsibility" comes into play here. Say you had the capability to create a new race, would you? A pioneer in the field named Dr. Ilya Ivanov was the leading expert in crossbreeding species at this point, having created hybrid zebra/donkeys, rat/mice, antelope/cows, and many more strange creatures. Even without advanced technology to a large degree, Stalin decided he could enlist Dr Ilya Ivanov to create a new slave army through crossbreeding animals and humans.

Ivanov had extensively studied reproductive biology among animals, and believed that it was possible to create a human-ape hybrid since the DNA sequence of chimpanzees has only a 5% difference from that of humans. This ape-man race  So, in French Guinea in the 1920s, Ivanov began experimenting with artificial insemination by using human sperm and attempting to impregnate the chimps. He was working with three female chimps who had been inseminated. As it turns out, the experiment failed, so Ivanov went back to the drawing board and reversed the project entirely.

Proving (if nothing else) that human beings will volunteer for anything, Ivanov managed to acquire five female volunteers to be inseminated with Chimpanzee sperm. He met resistance from the French government and had to move his research back to the Soviet Union, where he had trouble acquiring a male ape. Just as he ordered male apes to be brought to him to acquire their sperm, his work was deemed unprofessional by his veterinary institute and he was arrested. He ended up dying before being released back into the scientific community, leaving all sorts of questions open about the possibility of crossbreeding the two species. Stalin let the pursuit go, too.

There have been claims of experiments creating a hybrid, such as the famous Oliver case, though none have been validated. The concept of the missing link continues to perplex scientists and laypeople today. In the end, this is simply an interesting bit of history. Don't expect modern science to do much by way of these kinds of experiments. So, could it happen? Ivanov thought so. So does Karl Pilkington, but he's no scientist either.

PICTURE OF THE DAY (3/22/2012)

In Nagoya City in 1976, a young high school student named Hirohito Tanaka saw something in the sky that did not quite look right. He could not make out many details, but he got his camera and took multiple pictures of the strange craft. As you can see, it does not look like a standard airplane, but it looks like the classic saucer shape. Two years later, more strange craft were spotted and also photographed.

PICTURE OF THE DAY (3/14/2012)

In England in 1995, a town hall caught fire. The fire was substantial, and turned the entire building into rubble overnight. While firefighters battled the flames, however, a man named Tony O'Rahilly grabbed his camera and snapped some pictures of the inferno. As you can see above, one picture he took featured what appears to be a young girl, though no one can account for a young girl being on the scene or one missing after the event. Ghost enthusiasts will point you to a young girl named Jane Churm who died in 1677. She died in a fire that she had accidentally started, which also went on to destroy many homes in the neighborhood. Or it could be an illusion of some sort - what do you think?

There's nothing supernatural here, but I personally found this hilarious. So enjoy. More hardcore stories are actually on the way this week, so do not fret.

PICTURE OF THE DAY (3/7/2012)

Ah, the Money Pit. Check out Steve Sora's book Lost Treasure of the Knights Templar for a fun read about it. It's one of the most interesting treasure hunts of all time - and the kicker is THERE'S STILL NO TREASURE. That's right. Centuries of excavations have still not gotten to the alleged treasure at the bottom - booby traps of course helped this take so long. Will they ever get to the bottom of it?

PICTURE OF THE DAY (3/4/2012)

Say hello to Anneliese Michel, who allgedly became possessed in 1969. During the state she was in, she mutilated herself, drank her own urine, destroyed religious artifacts, and refused to eat. More than 60 exorcisms failed to return her to normal, and she eventually died from starvation.

Here we go - the Men in Black. This is one of the only pictures of the alleged men. You don't realize how crazy and fascinating this topic is unless you do more research beyond the Will Smith films. Let me direct you to Nick Redfern's wonderful book The Real Men in Black. I had a chance to interview Nick for a while, which is available on out Show Archive page.

PICTURE OF THE DAY (3/1/2012)

Crop circles are always going to be heavily disputed. This one seems to be a little bit less precise than the majority of really strange circles, but who am I to judge what kinds of creases alien craft could make? I don't know. What do you think?
